  • Ukraine lost access without warning to the military Starshield satellite internet network.
  • SpaceX restricted terminals for devices traveling faster than 100 mph, affecting drone operations.
  • A simultaneous Russian missile barrage knocked out power for 600,000 residents in Kyiv.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported a lack of advance warning from Western partners regarding incoming missiles.

KYIV, Ukraine (Azat TV) – Nearly five years into its defense against Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has entered a period of acute military vulnerability following an abrupt restriction on battlefield satellite communications and signs of friction in Western intelligence sharing. Ukrainian officials reported Wednesday that the military had lost access without warning to Starshield, a hardened military version of the Starlink satellite internet network financed by the Pentagon, according to The Inquirer. The double blow arrived overnight Wednesday, leaving Ukrainian officials and analysts to surmise that the restrictions stemmed from Washington amid escalating political friction between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kyiv’s leadership.

Battlefield Impact on Drones and Transport

Officials from Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said SpaceX implemented restrictions on Starshield devices traveling faster than 100 mph, causing terminals to lose connection once that speed was exceeded. The network underpins numerous combat operations, supporting troop and supply vehicles as well as reconnaissance and attack drones. Military experts noted that the speed limitation severely hampers Ukraine’s interceptor drones used to shoot down fast-moving Russian jet-powered Shahed attack drones. Serhiy Beskrestnov, a military expert advising President Volodymyr Zelensky on weapons technologies, stated that the restrictions deprive the country of vital defense capabilities against incoming aerial assaults. Official digital chats among military units at the front warned soldiers driving vehicles and pilots flying drones that the speed threshold for active Starlink connections had been lowered.

Starshield terminals are deployed extensively across the Ukrainian army for troop and matériel transport, logistical resupply, and long-range missions. Serhii Sternenko, a former Ukrainian defense ministry adviser, criticized the move as an attempt to undermine defensive capabilities just as Ukrainian forces have sought to regain ground through counterassaults. Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, commander of Ukraine’s Third Army Corps, reported that Ukrainian operations had liberated 277 square kilometers in an ongoing offensive initiated during the summer, though those claims could not be independently verified.

Simultaneous Energy Strikes and Intelligence Fears

The communications disruption coincided with a massive Russian missile barrage targeting energy infrastructure. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi reported that the overnight assault struck all three of Ukraine’s combined heat-and-power plants, leaving 600,000 residents in Kyiv without power as winter approaches. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also noted that Ukraine did not receive advance warning from Western partners ahead of the missile strikes, deepening concerns over intelligence support. While U.S. President Donald Trump maintained that intelligence sharing continues, the developments underscored mounting strain in Kyiv’s relations with Washington amid disagreements over energy strikes and diplomatic pressure.

The overnight Russian bombardment involved 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones, according to Ukrainian officials, representing one of the heaviest salvos of the conflict. The Ukrainian air force clarified Wednesday that while it received no advance warning before a missile struck at about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, it did receive warnings related to three subsequent waves of attacks that night. A parliamentary defense committee lawmaker, speaking anonymously, confirmed that intelligence-sharing channels with international partners had not completely halted. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy traveled to London for meetings with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to discuss emergency defensive support as European allies race to reinforce Ukraine’s resilience against ongoing hybrid warfare and infrastructure sabotage.
