Glentoran Managerial Debut Delayed by Pitch Conditions
Duncan Ferguson’s much-anticipated first match as Glentoran manager against Ballymena United has been officially postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, BBC Sport reported. The fixture was scheduled to take place at the Oval on Saturday at 15:00 BST, but match officials called off the contest following a pitch inspection conducted at 12:00 BST.
The former Everton striker, who was formally appointed to the Glentoran managerial post on Monday, must now wait to make his technical area debut. According to BBC Sport, Ferguson’s first game in charge will instead be an away fixture against Coleraine on Friday, 30 October, at 19:45 GMT, with live coverage scheduled on BBC iPlayer.
Severe Weather Disrupts Local Football Calendar
The postponement comes as severe weather sweeps across the region. The BBC Sport report noted that a yellow Met Office weather warning is active across Northern Ireland from 10:00 BST on Saturday until 12:00 GMT on Sunday. Furthermore, an amber weather warning has been issued for Saturday night, with forecasters anticipating strong winds reaching up to 75mph.
The adverse conditions have heavily impacted the local sporting schedule. In addition to the men’s Premiership fixture, the Women’s Challenge Cup final between Glentoran and Cliftonville was also called off on Friday in response to the escalating weather warnings.
