A new study published in August 2026 suggests that GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, may significantly reduce the risk of serious bone fractures in patients with type 2 diabetes. The research, which analyzed health records of over 133,000 adults aged 50-90 in the United States between 2015 and 2022, found a 21% lower risk of fragility fractures compared to patients prescribed DPP-4 diabetes medications.

The study, reported by Euronews, highlights a notable reduction in specific injury types: vertebral fractures decreased by 32%, while hip or femur fractures fell by 30%. Researchers observed that this protective effect appeared to be independent of weight loss or blood sugar improvements, suggesting a potential direct impact on bone health. This challenges longstanding concerns that rapid weight loss associated with these drugs might weaken bones.

Despite these findings, the study authors emphasize that the results do not definitively prove that GLP-1 drugs protect bones. Because the research was based on observational health records rather than a randomized clinical trial, factors such as baseline bone health, muscle strength, and physical activity levels may have influenced the data. Furthermore, the study noted no protective effect in individuals taking the medication for weight management without a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Further clinical trials are required to confirm whether these medications have a genuine biological protective effect on skeletal health.
