Limerick senior hurling manager John Kiely has confirmed that his entire backroom team will return en bloc for the 2027 season, securing crucial continuity as the county prepares to defend its league, Munster, and All-Ireland titles. The announcement, reported by the Limerick Leader, dispels early speculation regarding potential departures within the All-Ireland champions’ management structure.

Continuity Secured for the Shannonsiders

Star coach Paul Kinnerk will remain alongside Kiely as his right-hand man, while renowned sport psychologist Caroline Currid has also committed to another campaign. According to Balls.ie, Currid’s continued involvement is widely viewed as a massive psychological and structural boost for the Treaty county following their July final victory over Galway, which delivered Kiely a sixth All-Ireland title.

Retaining the Winning Formula

Alongside Kinnerk and Currid, selectors and coaches John Flavin, Alan Cunningham, Liam Cronin, and Donal O’Grady are all returning to the set-up. The management group’s collective decision follows a rigorous 34-week campaign that left players and staff physically drained, prompting a necessary period of post-season reflection.

“We had to have a bit of reflection to see what was the best thing to do going forward,” Kiely told the Irish Examiner. “We always take a bit of time to reflect just to give ourselves a bit of space to settle things down. It’s an intensive season, 34 weeks long, so you’re tired at the end of it. We’ve obviously committed to going forward again for 2027 and we’re very much looking forward to that.”

Kiely added that discussions have already begun among the backroom staff to evaluate areas for improvement from the previous year. The management team’s formal ratification is expected at the upcoming county board meeting, following his initial proposed extension announced by The Irish Times in September, which included an option for a further season thereafter.

Squad Stability and Future Preparations

Beyond the backroom staff, Kiely indicated he does not anticipate any senior player retirements despite a busy off-season that includes four panel members getting married between September and Christmas. While the core playing group is expected to remain intact, the manager noted that pre-season training will open its doors to emerging young talent from club competitions.

Looking ahead to the upcoming domestic calendar, Kiely will also monitor new experimental rules proposed by the Hurling Expert Advisory Group, which are set to debut in third-level Senior Hurling League Division 1 competitions involving local institutions like University of Limerick, Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Midwest, and Mary Immaculate College.
