Luke Grimes returns to the lead role as Kayce Dutton, who transitions from his life at the Yellowstone Ranch to his duties as a U.S. Marshal. The upcoming season continues to explore his struggle to balance his law enforcement career with his family responsibilities. Joining Grimes in the returning cast are Brecken Merrill as Tate, along with Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty, reprising their respective roles as Thomas Rainwater and Mo.
The second season introduces new narrative stakes, as CBS revealed the premiere episode will follow Kayce as he goes rogue to rescue his son, Tate, who is taken hostage. This search leads the Marshals into a broader investigation of a criminal operation connected to the East Camp land grab. Marque Richardson joins the recurring cast as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns, and Morgan Lindholm’s role as Maddie, the daughter of Logan Marshall-Green’s character Pete “Cal” Calvin, has been expanded.
While the show maintains ties to the original franchise, it has established its own continuity. The series does not include Monica Dutton, whose death prior to the events of the series serves as a foundational plot point. Although Riley Green appeared as the character Garrett in the first season, the character’s death confirms his exit, barring potential future appearances via flashback.
