Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak, declaring the prevention of such breaches a “national responsibility.” Speaking at the NDA Parliamentary Party’s ‘Mangal Milan’ meeting on Tuesday, the Prime Minister urged for collective efforts to establish a foolproof examination system, according to Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the government acted immediately upon receiving reports of the leak, which led to the arrest of 13 individuals, including an alleged “kingpin” identified as a chemistry lecturer linked to the National Testing Agency (NTA). Mr. Rijiju noted that the Prime Minister has called for the involvement of the country’s top legal experts to ensure that those found guilty face the “strictest possible punishment” to deter future irregularities.
Legislative and Political Context
The government’s stance comes amid intensifying pressure from student-led protests, particularly those organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). On Monday, protesters attempting to march on parliament were met with police action, including the use of tear gas and lathicharges. The protests, which have disrupted the opening of the Monsoon Session of parliament, are centered on demands for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and accountability for irregularities in the NEET and CBSE marking systems.
While the Prime Minister did not directly address the protesters in his public opening remarks for the parliamentary session, he signaled to his coalition partners that managing youth aspirations is a priority. He urged MPs to adopt a positive outreach strategy, framing the issue of leak-free examinations as a matter of national importance rather than partisan politics.
Systemic Reforms and Future Outlook
The NEET-UG exam, which serves as a gateway for over two million aspiring doctors in India, was scrapped in May following allegations of a widespread question paper leak. A re-test was conducted late last month to mitigate the impact on students. The government has since launched a public portal for reporting suspicious activities related to the examination process.
Beyond the NEET scandal, the government is navigating broader economic and social pressures, including concerns raised by farmers regarding the India-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. The ‘Mangal Milan’ meeting, while intended as a celebration of recent electoral gains in West Bengal, shifted focus toward these pressing national grievances, underscoring the government’s need to reconcile its policy agenda with growing public discontent.
