Pakistan’s Khawaja Asif Warns of ‘Full-Blown War’ Amid Rising Tensions with India

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Signals Escalation

Amid intensifying tensions between India and Pakistan, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has made a stark declaration, stating that the country has no option left but to engage in a full-blown war with its neighbor. Speaking to a Pakistani media outlet on May 9, 2025, Asif attributed the situation to what he described as ‘aggressive actions’ by India over the past four days. He remarked, “We don’t see any other available means other than this option (war). We have tried to de-escalate the situation, but the chances of that seem minimal. We have to pay them back in the same coin.”

Cross-Border Skirmishes Intensify

The escalation follows a series of cross-border skirmishes and drone attacks along the Line of Control (LoC). According to reports, Pakistan launched artillery fire, missile attacks, and drone strikes targeting various locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Indian armed forces successfully intercepted many of these drones and retaliated by targeting Pakistani air defense systems.

India’s military response included ‘Operation Sindoor,’ conducted on May 7, which targeted nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This operation was a response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba, had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan’s Retaliatory Stance

In his statements, Khawaja Asif emphasized that Pakistan would not de-escalate the situation. “People should have no doubts that war is at their doors,” he said, though he did not provide details on how Pakistan’s military would proceed. Echoing this sentiment, Pakistan Army spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated, “We will not de-escalate — with the damages India did on our side, they should take a hit. So far, we have been protecting ourselves, but they will get an answer in our own timing.”

Earlier, Asif faced criticism for his remarks about not intercepting Indian drones to avoid revealing Pakistan’s military positions. This statement sparked ridicule on social media, with many questioning the logic behind such a strategy.

Impact on Civilians and Regional Stability

The escalating conflict has had a significant impact on civilians in both countries. In Jammu, mosque loudspeakers were used to urge residents to turn off their lights as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, intermittent sounds of heavy artillery were reported, and blackouts were observed in several areas. Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed to residents to stay indoors and avoid spreading rumors.

In Pakistan, similar precautions have been taken, with authorities urging citizens to remain vigilant. The heightened military activity has raised concerns about the potential for a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations.

International Reactions and Concerns

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions. The United Nations and several countries have called for restraint and dialogue to prevent further deterioration of the situation. However, both India and Pakistan appear firm in their respective stances, with no immediate signs of de-escalation.

India has also raised concerns about Pakistan’s history of supporting terrorism. During a recent review meeting of Pakistan’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India highlighted the potential misuse of international aid for state-supported cross-border terrorism.

Sports and Cultural Events Affected

The rising tensions have also impacted sports and cultural events in the region. The inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic javelin event, originally scheduled for May 24 in Bengaluru, has been postponed indefinitely. Organizers cited solidarity with the armed forces as the reason for the decision. Similarly, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended amid the ongoing conflict.

Double Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra, who was involved in organizing the javelin event, stated, “In this critical moment, standing firm with the nation matters most. All our gratitude and thoughts are with our armed forces.”

The situation between India and Pakistan remains precarious, with both sides showing no signs of backing down. The international community continues to monitor the developments closely, urging both nations to prioritize dialogue over conflict. As the region grapples with the consequences of escalating tensions, the hope for a peaceful resolution remains uncertain.
