Resolution Filed Amidst Final Months in Office
Representative Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, introduced a new impeachment resolution against President Donald Trump on Monday. The move marks another chapter in a long-standing effort by the outgoing congressman to challenge the president’s tenure. Green, who has served in the House since 2005 and lost his Democratic primary runoff in May, explicitly acknowledged the political reality that the resolution is unlikely to pass given the current Republican control of both chambers of Congress.
In his formal filing, Green argues that the president poses a “great threat to the United States democratic republic” and accuses the administration of violating Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of the Constitution. The resolution focuses heavily on the operational conduct of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), alleging that these agencies function as “unaccountable paramilitary police forces” that have normalized unjustified civilian killings and coverups.
Institutional Rebuttal and Safety Concerns
The White House and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have responded with sharp rebukes. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis characterized the resolution as “garbage,” asserting that such rhetoric contributes to a climate of violence against law enforcement. According to official figures cited by DHS, officers have faced a significant increase in threats, including a 1,300% rise in physical assaults, a 3,300% increase in vehicle attacks, and an 8,000% rise in death threats.
A DHS spokesperson dismissed the allegations as “unequivocally false” and “inconsequential,” noting that the agency’s focus remains on arresting individuals charged or convicted of serious crimes, including murder, rape, and terrorism. The department emphasized that nearly 70% of ICE arrests involve individuals with criminal histories and reiterated that there are no arrest quotas in place. They further noted that officers receive regular training in de-escalation and use-of-force policies.
Legislative Strategy and Future Outlook
Despite the lack of a clear path to success in the current Congress, Green maintains that the filing serves a necessary purpose. In a letter accompanying the resolution, he stated, “Articles of impeachment that are not approved by Congress can express on-the-record disapproval of presidential actions and demonstrate that there are some of us watching and willing to act.”
This is not the first time Green has sought to impeach the president; he has filed multiple resolutions across both of President Trump’s terms. While the House twice impeached the president during his first term, neither effort resulted in a conviction by the Senate. As the current legislative session progresses, this latest effort is expected to face a procedural standstill, serving primarily as a symbolic legislative statement rather than a viable mechanism for removal.
