Sony Interactive Entertainment is facing mounting pressure from consumer watchdogs and legal entities regarding its pricing strategies on the PlayStation Store. A recent study, highlighted by the Dutch site Tweakers, reveals that physical PS5 games can cost up to €50 less than their digital counterparts, raising concerns about the impact of Sony’s platform control on market competition.

The study, which analyzed 16 high-profile PS5 titles, indicates that digital prices on the PlayStation Store remain stagnant long after physical retailers have significantly discounted the same games. While major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy frequently offer deep discounts on titles like God of War Ragnarök, the digital storefront often maintains prices near launch levels. This disparity has fueled allegations of monopolistic behavior, with a Dutch consumer group reportedly filing a lawsuit claiming that console owners pay, on average, 47% more for digital content compared to physical alternatives.

The tension is exacerbated by Sony’s shift toward a digital-first ecosystem. With plans to reduce physical disc production by 2028, industry observers fear the decline of the secondary market, where gamers typically resell or trade physical copies. While Sony has suggested that third-party retailers could sell redemption codes, the industry has seen a cooling interest in such “code-in-a-box” products, which retailers like GameStop have found difficult to move. As physical options diminish, critics argue that the PlayStation Store will face even less incentive to offer competitive pricing, further locking consumers into a high-cost digital environment.
