CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a 6,500-word essay titled ‘The Future is for Everyone,’ outlined a vision where ‘personal superintelligence’ is widely distributed, framing this accessibility as a critical safeguard against the risks of concentrated corporate or governmental control.
This shift represents a deliberate turn for Meta. After a period of moving toward closed-model development—fueled by massive investments in infrastructure and talent—the company is once again embracing the open-source philosophy that defined its earlier Llama releases. The release of ‘Muse Glimmer,’ a 30-billion parameter model optimized for edge devices like smartphones, signals this return. Market observers view this as a pragmatic adaptation to both shifting US policy winds and competitive dynamics, positioning Meta alongside Nvidia’s open secure AI coalition.
The ‘Slow and Steady’ Industry Standard
The pivot arrives as the US AI industry enters what analysts describe as a ‘slow and steady’ phase. Following years of rapid, high-speed development, firms like OpenAI and Meta are increasingly operating under de facto speed limits. Zuckerberg’s defense of open-source AI is fundamentally a geopolitical and economic argument. By enabling individuals and smaller communities to access superintelligent tools, he argues, society creates a ‘balance of power’ that prevents any single entity from monopolizing the technology. This vision includes a $1 billion ‘Future is for Everyone Fund’ to support communities hosting Meta’s data centers.
However, the global race remains intense. While the US adopts a cautious, policy-heavy approach, competitors in China—such as Alibaba, Moonshot, and ByteDance—are continuing to scale their models aggressively.
