Quick Read

  • Claudia Winkleman is stepping down from her BBC chat show after one season.
  • The host cited personal anxiety and a preference for her existing roles as the reasons for departure.
  • The BBC confirmed she will return later this year for the new season of 'The Celebrity Traitors'.

British television presenter Claudia Winkleman has officially stepped down from her eponymous BBC chat show, The Claudia Winkleman Show, following the conclusion of its first season. The announcement, confirmed on July 16, 2026, marks the end of a high-profile experiment for the broadcaster that sought to fill the Friday night slot typically occupied by Graham Norton.

The Decision to Step Away

Winkleman, a staple of British television known for her work on The Traitors U.K. and Strictly Come Dancing, cited personal discomfort as the primary driver for her departure. In an official statement, she expressed gratitude to the BBC and her production team but admitted that the specific demands of the sofa-based talk show format were not a natural fit.

“Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realized I was just too nervous to enjoy it,” Winkleman stated. “Maybe one day I will give it another try, but for now I already have the best jobs in the world and absolutely love the shows I’m doing.”

Performance and Future Projects

The show, which launched in February 2026 and was co-produced by Graham Norton’s production company, So Television, faced challenges in establishing its audience. While it attracted notable guests, including Jeff Goldblum and Jennifer Saunders, ratings remained inconsistent, trailing behind the figures typically commanded by Norton’s flagship program. Industry analysts noted that while the show averaged between 1.5 and 2 million viewers, it struggled to replicate the cultural impact of Winkleman’s other major commitments.

Ed Havard, the BBC’s director of entertainment, acknowledged the decision with appreciation for Winkleman’s contributions. “Claudia’s warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy,” Havard said. “Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision.”

The BBC confirmed that Winkleman remains a central figure at the network. She is set to return later this year for the next installment of The Celebrity Traitors, a franchise that continues to draw massive audiences in the U.K., with the previous finale reaching approximately 15 million viewers.
