As reported by Finovate, the new platform allows users of major AI systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude to authorize their AI agents to execute complex financial transactions, manage assets, and interact with decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems using natural language.

The introduction of PayBox signals a transition from experimental AI assistants to functional transactional agents capable of conducting commerce directly on behalf of users. By establishing a secure payment layer, MoonPay aims to address one of the primary hurdles in agentic commerce: enabling AI to hold, move, and spend funds safely without exposing sensitive credentials or private keys.

Conversational Finance and AI Integration

PayBox operates as a connector within ChatGPT and Claude, enabling users to issue transactional instructions as if they were speaking to a human financial assistant. For example, a user can prompt the AI with natural language commands such as “maximize yield using Aave,” “onramp $100 into PYUSD,” or request the agent to book a flight and purchase online goods directly.

Once the instruction is received, the AI agent prepares the transaction details. Depending on the user’s selected configuration, the transaction is finalized without requiring developer tools or third-party intermediaries. This frictionless user experience is designed to abstract away the technical complexities of Web3 transactions, token bridging, and smart contract interactions, making decentralized finance accessible to non-technical users through conversational interfaces.

The Security Architecture: x402 and Threshold Cryptography

To mitigate the security risks associated with granting autonomous agents access to financial accounts, MoonPay has integrated several advanced cryptographic and traditional payment security protocols. The platform leverages Visa’s agentic commerce protocol alongside x402, an open protocol designed to allow AI agents and web services to safely initiate and settle programmatic payments across the internet.

By utilizing Visa’s protocol, PayBox ensures that MoonPay itself never sees or stores full payment card details. For Web3 operations, wallet private keys are protected using threshold cryptography and secure hardware enclaves. Under this cryptographic model, no single party—neither MoonPay, the AI platform, nor the AI agent—has access to the complete private key. Transactions cannot be signed or executed without meeting specific threshold validation requirements, effectively preventing unauthorized asset drainage or security breaches if the AI agent’s environment is compromised.

Autonomous vs. Approval: Defining the Policy Layer

Recognizing varying risk tolerances among users, PayBox features a dual-mode policy layer that defines the operational boundaries of the AI agent:

  • Approval Mode: In this configuration, the AI agent can draft and prepare transactions, but every execution requires explicit user authorization via a secure passkey.
  • Autonomous Mode: This mode allows the AI agent to complete transactions independently, but only within strict, user-defined spending limits and pre-established operational policies. Even when operating autonomously, the agent is restricted by the secure enclave and cannot access raw card credentials or private keys.
